Wishing on Nipah Seeds
Nipah seeds are easily found all throughout the river in Muar, where mangroves line the beds. In Singapore where are mangroves are now sparse and harder to access, these seeds are hard to come by in this form (although we would all have encountered it as attap chee in ice kacang).
We later were taken to the river to cast our wishes into the ocean to allow the tides to take them away.
She later told us that this is something she loved to do with Siddra whenever they were in Muar as well, letting the sea take their wishes and maybe allowing them to grow into their own nipah islands.
During our first excursion to Muar with colleagues from different departments, Shooshie had us walk along the river to try to source for as many seeds as possible. After which, she asked us to write on them—wishes, dreams, idea—something for the sea to take in and know us by.
Mr Otak Otak
Wrapped in the locally-sourced nipah leaves, Mr Otak Otak is Shooshie’s recommended shop to get Otak Otak in Muar. She claims she has tested every other stall and this is the best.
We are not able to leave Muar without dropping them a visit at least once.
